It is always recommended to utilize the Duo Mobile App for your Smart Device whenever possible. The mobile application can be used to generate passcodes without cell or WiFi access so even if you are in airplane mode you can always open up the application and generate a passcode. If you do not own a smartphone/tablet but own a cell phone or do not plan to have a device with you while traveling there is something you can do ahead of time.

BuckeyePass offers multiple options for protecting your university access while traveling. Understanding and selecting the right multi-factor authentication (MFA) option for you will ensure you stay connected to your important Ohio State resources.
Maintaining your information
By keeping your information and BuckeyePass preferences up-to-date, you can limit the chances of having issues while traveling or receiving technical support. The information associated with BuckeyePass, such as your registered devices and phone numbers are accessible on My Settings & Devices.
Understanding Export Controls
It is important to understand how export controls may affect your international travel and what resources maybe restricted in other countries or regions. Selecting the best BuckeyePass method for you
The Duo Mobile App on your smart device is the recommended option whenever possible. The Duo Mobile App provides secure and convenient methods for authenticating, even without a cellular or WiFi connection. Conveniently making it a great option when traveling to an area with limited internet connectivity. BuckeyePass offers additional MFA methods to ensure you stay connected when one option may not be suitable for your travel needs. The available BuckeyePass options include:

Duo Mobile Application: A secure and convenient way to receive Push Notifications or generate a one-time passcode.

Security Key: A secure and convenient method that can be used on multiple devices with most BuckeyePass protected services. Security Keys can also be used on some personal accounts.

Touch ID (MacOS): Duo supported devices and web browsers can utilize Touch ID to authenticate with BuckeyePass.

SMS passcodes: SMS allows you to send passcodes to your mobile phone via SMS text messages.

Hard Tokens: An alternative to the methods listed above, a Hard Token is a device that can be used to generate one-time passcodes. Hard Tokens can be purchased by individuals or with departmental funding at TechHUB.
Having a Backup Plan
It is important to have a backup plan when traveling in case something happens to your primary MFA method. Knowing your options and planning ahead will ensure you stay connected to Ohio State resources. Important things to consider may include:
- If your MFA device gets lost, damaged, or stolen?
- Enroll more than one MFA device with BuckeyePass.
- International phone numbers can also be enrolled with BuckeyePass.
- Make sure to add your international phone number before traveling outside of the US.
- Ensure the Duo Mobile Application is installed on your smart devices.
- MFA methods available when internet connectivity may be limited: Duo Mobile one-time passcode, Security Key, Hard Token one-time passcode

OFAC Restricted Countries and Regions
Beginning May 5, 2022, users attempting to authenticate to a Duo-protected application from an access device with an IP address originating in an OFAC-regulated country or region will be blocked from completing their login and receive an error message. Click here for more details.
